LeBron: I Admire How Calipari Takes High Egos, Turns Them Into Team

Mar 25, 2015 1:35 PM

LeBron James and John Calipari have grown increasingly close over the years after they were introduced by a "family friend" believed to be William Wesley.

James said his close friend and former St. Vincent-St. Mary teammate Brandon Weems was on Calipari's coaching staff at Kentucky for two years, and "I gained even more of a relationship" with Calipari.

"What I admire is how he's able to take, year after year, these high egos coming out of high school and turn it into a team," James said of Calipari. "He makes them believe, not even believe, it's what it should be, that the team is more important than the individual. No matter who you are, no matter where you come from, in order for the team to have success everyone has to buy in.

"I love that about him, he doesn't cap, he doesn't put a cap on his talent, on those guys," James continued. "He gives them the reins if they play the right way, and he wants them to succeed at the highest level. So, you can respect that."

Exec: John Calipari Driven Nuts By NBA Failure, Wants Another Chance

Mar 25, 2015 1:00 PM

John Calipari has become college basketball's most impactful coach during his tenure at Kentucky with a formula that has produced one national championship, two runner-up finishes and an undefeated season to date.

Calipari, however, did not succeed in his stint in the NBA with the New Jersey Nets.

"He desperately wants it," the front office official said about returning to the NBA. "He won’t say it out loud. The NBA is the only place he’s ever failed and it drives him nuts. He’s not the same guy he was then. He came to the NBA and he wasn’t ready. He’s ready now."

Calipari has remained close with Brett Yormark, CEO of the Nets.

The Nets could have $60 million in cap space in the summer of 2016, which coincides with the free agency of LeBron James and Kevin Durant.

"All these kids, if you look at a free agent list and check off the ones who he’s got a relationship with you could build an All-Star team," a person close to Calipari said. "Start with LeBron James."

Wall, Cousins Believe 09-10 Kentucky Was Better Than This Year's Team

Mar 17, 2015 5:40 PM

John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins believe their Kentucky team in 09-10 was better than their current side even though they were upset by West Virginia in the regional final.

"Well, they got the better record, but I wouldn't say that," Wall said when asked if the current team will be considered the best Kentucky side ever.

"We were a better team, but we didn't win," Wall said. "They're going to have the leverage because they went 40-0 and got a national championship to back it up."

Cousins agreed with Wall when told about his comments.

"I mean, yeah. [John is] right. They would be considered the best, but we all know the truth," Cousins said. "Hopefully these guys do pull this off."

Knicks Heavily Scouting Karl-Anthony Towns, Willie Cauley-Stein

Mar 7, 2015 4:35 PM

Phil Jackson and the New York Knicks' front office have traveled to scout several practices of the Kentucky basketball team.

The Knicks are expected to pick between No. 1 and No. 5 in the NBA Draft and could consider Karl-Anthony Towns or Willie Cauley-Stein.

“Honestly, I really wasn’t looking,” Karl-Anthony Towns said. “I was just focused on practice. I didn’t know.”

Mark Warkentien has attended nearly a dozen of Kentucky's practices this season.

"Karl isn’t a good kid, he’s a great kid,” says Kentucky assistant coach Barry Rohrssen, a New Yorker who is affectionately known as Slice. “He will be successful in anything he does.”

Kentucky Leads NCAA In Efficiency Differential At +32.6

Mar 4, 2015 3:29 PM

When Kentucky won the national championship in 2012 with a team built around Anthony Davis, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Terrence Jones, they finished the season with an efficiency differential of +24.8.

The Wildcats scored 114.4 points per 100 possessions while giving up just 89.5. Kentucky lost just two games that season (Indiana and Vanderbilt).

This season, John Calipari's team has an efficiency differential of +32.6. Kentucky is scoring 114.0 points per 100 possessions and have been even better on defense by allowing 81.4 points per 100 possessions.

Kentucky figures to play at least some closer games during the SEC Tournament and NCAA Tournament, which could reduce the efficiency differential, but it will likely remain significantly better than their very good 11-12 season.

Season-by-Season Efficiency Differential Leader (Major Conference)
2014: Louisville (+28.7)
2013: Florida (+26.8)
2012: Kentucky (+24.8)
2011: Ohio State (+27.0)
2010: Kansas (+24.7)
